Why Upgrading from Oil or Gas to Electric Heat Pumps Makes Financial Sense

A modern interior with a wood slat wall, an AC unit, a green wall, and a woven pendant light.

Homeowners in the Alle-Kiski Valley are rethinking the traditional gas furnace and opting for heat pumps instead. Why? These systems provide year-round comfort, don’t rely on fossil fuels, and operate more efficiently. This means you save money.

A heat pump is both a heater and an air conditioner. This means you only need one system to keep your home comfortable all year long. And with advances in cold-climate heat pump technology, these systems perform efficiently even during Pittsburgh’s chilly winters, helping you significantly reduce your winter heating bills.

Wondering if a heat pump is the right investment for your family? Here’s what you need to know, from the local heat pump experts at MW Mechanical.

Why the Shift Away From Gas Furnaces?

Many municipalities and states are enacting policies that favor clean electric heating solutions over gas combustion. Some areas have even prohibited natural gas hookups in new residential construction, signaling a larger move toward all-electric homes. Choosing an electric heat pump now puts you ahead of the curve and helps future-proof your home.

This shift is significant from an environmental standpoint. A gas furnace burns fossil fuels to generate heat, producing greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide (CO₂) and potentially harmful byproducts like carbon monoxide (CO). These gases are vented outdoors but still contribute to air pollution.

A heat pump, by contrast, doesn’t burn anything. It transfers heat using electricity, and if it comes from clean sources like solar or wind, your home’s heating and cooling becomes virtually emissions-free.

One of the most logical reasons why people switch is cost savings. Heat pumps are much more efficient than gas furnaces and oil boilers, so you’ll see a large reduction in your heating bills. With fuel costs rising quickly, an electric heat pump can be an excellent investment.

How Heat Pumps Work

An air-source heat pump moves heat instead of generating it. During the summer, it works like a traditional air conditioner. It pulls heat from the inside of your home and releases it outside, cooling your indoor air. In the winter, the cycle reverses, and the system extracts heat from the outdoor air and uses it to warm your living spaces.

Even when it’s cold outside, there is still heat in the air that the heat pump can capture and transfer. Modern heat pumps are engineered to extract heat efficiently, even in below-freezing temperatures.

Is a Heat Pump Expensive to Run?

Heat pumps are less expensive to run than furnaces and oil boilers. They are all-electric, so while your electricity bill will increase, you’ll also eliminate your gas or oil bill. The University of Maine found that most homes experience a 25% increase in electricity costs per heat pump installed. In the end, however, these electricity costs will be less than what you would have spent on fuel.

Heat Pump Efficiency vs. Traditional Heating Systems

Heat pumps are far more efficient than gas or oil heating systems. This is because heat transfer wastes significantly less energy than combustion. When you burn gas or oil to generate heat, some of it is released as exhaust.

HVAC efficiency is generally measured by either the coefficient of performance (COP) or Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE).  AFUE measures how well a fuel-burning HVAC system converts fuel into usable heat. If it releases 10% of burned fuel as exhaust, it has an AFUE of 90%. COP is a ratio that compares how much energy a heat pump creates versus how much it consumes. If it produces the same amount as it uses, the ratio is 1.0.

Here’s a look at the efficiency of heat pumps vs. gas furnaces and heat pumps vs. boilers, based on ENERGY STAR data:

Type of HVAC SystemEfficiency Rating
Heat Pump3.0+ COP (Source)This translates to a ~300% AFUE.
High-Efficiency Gas Furnace95%-98% AFUE (Source)
High-Efficiency Oil Boiler87%+ AFUE (Source)

Cost Savings With Heat Pumps

One of the most common questions we get asked at MW Mechanical is, “Do heat pumps save money?” Over the system’s lifespan, the answer is YES.

Upfront, heat pumps do cost more than gas furnaces or oil boilers (around $4,000 more). However, the difference in energy efficiency means that you’ll use much less energy. As seen in the table above, heat pumps can be at least three times more efficient than gas furnaces or oil boilers. Depending on how cold it is outside, this difference can be even greater.

This high efficiency translates directly into lower monthly energy bills. At MW Mechanical, we usually see our customers get $9,000 back in just eight years.

Additional Benefits of Heat Pumps

Aside from efficiency and environmental impact, heat pumps offer several practical benefits:

  • Year-Round Comfort: With one system handling both heating and cooling, you eliminate the need for a separate furnace and central AC unit.
  • Better Humidity Control: Heat pumps tend to dehumidify more effectively than standard air conditioners, making your home more comfortable in the summer months.
  • Quieter Operation: Compared to many older furnaces or AC systems, heat pumps often run more quietly, especially variable-speed models.
  • Improved Safety: Because heat pumps don’t use combustion, there’s no risk of carbon monoxide leaks, which is a concern with gas furnaces.
